A medic must pack gauze directly into the wound cavity, sometimes as deep as 5 inches into the body, to stop bleeding from an artery. It\u2019s an agonizing process that doesn\u2019t always work\u2013if bleeding hasn\u2019t stopped after three minutes of applying direct pressure, the medic must pull out all the gauze and start over again. It\u2019s so painful, \u201cyou take the guy\u2019s gun away first,\u201d says former U.S. Army Special Operations medic John Steinbaugh.<\/p>\n<p>Even with this emergency treatment, many soldiers still bleed to death; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/article\/2013-06\/amazing-tourniquet-invention-saves-two-lives\">hemorrhage<\/a> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21795876\">leading cause of death<\/a> on the battlefield. \u201cGauze bandages just don\u2019t work for anything serious,\u201d says Steinbaugh, who tended to injured soldiers during more than a dozen deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
