But in the past week astronauts onboard the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/international-space-station\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" class=\"\">International Space Station<\/a> have intentionally lit a series of blazes in research designed to study the behaviour of flames in zero gravity.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists behind the experiment, called Confined Combustion, say it will help improve fire safety on the ISS and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2019\/jul\/06\/everyones-going-to-the-moon-again-apollo-11-50th-aniversary\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\">future lunar missions<\/a> by helping predict how a blaze might progress in low gravity conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Paul Ferkul, of the Universities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/space\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" class=\"\">Space<\/a> Research Association, who is working on the project, said: \u201cThat is the immediate and most practical goal since NASA can use the knowledge to improve material selection and fire safety strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Playing with fire can be dangerous and never more so than when confined in a space capsule floating 250 miles above the Earth.
