Neuralink President Max Hodak tweeted Saturday that he has left the company he co-founded with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Hodak didn’t elaborate on why he left the company or elaborate on the circumstance for his departure. “I am no longer at Neuralink (as of a few weeks ago),” he tweeted. “I learned a ton there and remain a huge cheerleader for the company! Onward to new things.”

✨Some personal news:✨ I am no longer at Neuralink (as of a few weeks ago). I learned a ton there and remain a huge cheerleader for the company! Onward to new things.— Max Hodak (@max_hodak) May 1, 2021

Neuralink is focused on developing brain-machine interfaces. Last month, the company posted a video to YouTube that appeared to show a monkey with a Neuralink implant in its brain moving a cursor on a computer screen using only its mind.

Cosmism: Russia’s religion for the rocket age https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/cosmism-russias-religion-for-the-rocket-age https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/cosmism-russias-religion-for-the-rocket-age#respond Sun, 25 Apr 2021 07:15:58 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/cosmism-russias-religion-for-the-rocket-age

This brave new world seeks to meld space and cyber-space. For both Immortalists and Transhumanists, the human personality lies in the brain, which can live eternally if “uploaded” onto a computer, a favoured theme of science fiction writers. The company Neuralink aims to provide brain-machine interfaces which merge human consciousness and artificial intelligence – helping humans “stay relevant” in a world dominated by AI.

On 28 December 1903, during a particularly harsh Russian winter, a pauper died of pneumonia on a trunk he had rented in a room full of destitute strangers. Nikolai Fyodorov died in obscurity, and he remains almost unknown in the West, yet in life he was celebrated by Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky, and by a devoted group of disciples – one of whom is credited with winning the Space Race for the Soviet Union.

Now, just as he prophesied, Fyodorov is living a strange afterlife. He has become an icon for transhumanists worldwide and a spiritual guide for interplanetary exploration.

Fyodorov’s poverty came by religious choice rather than material necessity. He was the illegitimate child of Prince Pavel Gagarin, and spent his early childhood on the family’s country estate, until the sudden death of both his father and grandfather, Prince Ivan Gagarin. While Fyodorov’s family had no connection to the first cosmonaut, Anastasia Gacheva of the Fyodorov Museum-Library in Moscow says there is “an important symbolic coincidence – between the Gagarin who foresaw spaceflight in a philosophical way, and Yuri Gagarin who became the world’s first cosmonaut”.

Inverse spoke to Andrew Schwartz, a University of Pittsburgh neurobiologist who helped pioneer BCI technology — and he says that Neuralink seems to be bragging about things that scientists, himself included, could do decades ago.

Neuralink made a huge production out of something researchers have been able to do for decades.

Monkey uses brain implants to play Pong https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/monkey-uses-brain-implants-to-play-pong https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/monkey-uses-brain-implants-to-play-pong#respond Sun, 11 Apr 2021 16:24:24 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/monkey-uses-brain-implants-to-play-pong

Neuralink, co-founded by Elon Musk in 2016, has revealed a macaque with chips embedded on each side of its brain, playing a mind-controlled version of the 1972 video game, Pong.

Although established in 2016, Neuralink remained secretive about its work until July 2019, when Musk presented his concept for a new brain–machine interface (BMI). Not only would this help physically diseased or injured people, Musk believed it could also treat mental illness – and even be used by healthy individuals who might wish to enhance themselves.

A prototype in August 2020 demonstrated the Neuralink technology in a pig. This coin-sized chip, featuring a read/write link, contained 1024 channels with a wireless megabit data rate and all-day battery life. Brain signals conveying the pig’s sense of smell could be seen in real time. The FDA had by then approved it as a breakthrough device, allowing use in limited human trials under the US federal guidelines for testing medical devices.

Elon Musk finally got to show off his monkey.

Neuralink, a company founded by Musk that is developing artificial-intelligence-powered microchips to go in people’s brains, released a video Thursday appearing to show a macaque using the tech to play video games, including “Pong.”

Musk has boasted about Neuralink’s tests on primates before, but this is the first time the company has put one on display. During a presentation in 2019, Musk said the company had enabled a monkey to “control a computer with its brain.”

Neuralink Co-Founder Says We Have the Tech to Build an Actual Jurassic Park https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/neuralink-co-founder-says-we-have-the-tech-to-build-an-actual-jurassic-park https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/neuralink-co-founder-says-we-have-the-tech-to-build-an-actual-jurassic-park#respond Tue, 06 Apr 2021 00:23:18 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/04/neuralink-co-founder-says-we-have-the-tech-to-build-an-actual-jurassic-park

For the uninitiated, “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” make up a five-movie franchise — with a sixth in the works — all based on Michael Crichton’s hit novel about how bad of an idea it was to open a place like Jurassic Park. Leveraging recent advances in genetic research to create entirely new creatures is certainly an enticing idea, though there’s a big difference between something potentially being feasible and actually being a good idea.

But it’s not all fun and games when you’re playing god and creating new dinosaurs. Hodak later added that de-extinction could be a valuable tool for increasing biodiversity, perhaps because we find ourselves in the midst of an era of mass extinction.

“Biodiversity (antifragility) is definitely valuable; conservation is important and makes sense,” Hodak tweeted minutes later. “But why do we stop there? Why don’t we more intentionally try to generate novel diversity?”

Neuralink Co-Founder: “We’re Gonna Need a Better Term Than ‘Video Game‘” https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/03/neuralink-co-founder-were-gonna-need-a-better-term-than-video-game https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/03/neuralink-co-founder-were-gonna-need-a-better-term-than-video-game#respond Tue, 16 Mar 2021 10:22:29 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/03/neuralink-co-founder-were-gonna-need-a-better-term-than-video-game

With powerful engines, near-photorealistic graphics, and the ability to build incredible, immersive worlds, it’s hard to imagine what the next big technological advance in gaming might be.

Based on a recent tweet by Neuralink co-founder and President Max Hodak, the word might not even apply. In it, he hinted — vaguely, to be fair — that whatever forms of entertainment get programmed into neural implants and brain-computer interfaces will represent a paradigm shift that moves beyond the current terminology.

“We’re gonna need a better term than ‘video game’ once we start programming for more of the sensorium,” Hodak tweeted.
