Brain Implants Like Neuralink Could Change Your Personality In Surprising Ways

Posted by in categories: computing, Elon Musk, neuroscience

Elon Musk wants to put a computer chip in your brain. Well, maybe not in your brain, but in the brain of some human somewhere.

Musk’s neurotech startup, Neuralink, has been working toward implanting its skull-embedded brain chip in a human since it was founded in 2016. After years of testing on animal subjects, Musk announced in December that the company planned to initiate human trials within six months (though this wasn’t the first time he’d said these trials were on the horizon).

Neuralink has spent over half a decade figuring out how to translate brain signals into digital outputs – imagine being able to move a cursor, send a text message, or type in a word processor with just a thought.

I had the privilege of speaking with James Douma-a self-described deep learning dork. James’ experience and technical understanding are not easily found. I think you’ll find his words to be intriguing and insightful. This is one of several conversations James and I plan to have.

Neuralink 2022 Show and Tell Condensed

Posted by in categories: computing, neuroscience

I wanted to focus on the animal testing portion of the Show and Tell. Neuralink representatives showed us videos of a pig that has a cortex and spinal chip in its body. It also has pin points on joints in its leg that are sending data to the Neuralink scientist. When the scientist stimulates a joint it creates an uncontrolled movement. The pig moves its leg without wanting too, but because someone else wanted it too, the pig did not want to move. That’s the focus of this video.

Gates and Bezos back Neuralink-competitor Synchron in a new funding

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, business, computing, health, neuroscience

Many investors are jumping to inject money into the startup.

Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos-backed foundations (Gates Frontier and Bezos Expeditions) have joined other companies in investing $75 million in Synchron, the endovascular brain-computer interface (BCI) company, according to a press release by the organization published on Thursday. This is a Series C financing round led by ARCH Venture Partners that brings the total amount raised since inception to $145 million.

Many investors on board.

Elon Musk is confident Neuralink will restore vision & full body functionality

Posted by in categories: Elon Musk, neuroscience

Elon Musk is confident that Neuralink will be able to restore vision in humans who are blind and full body functionality in humans who have a severed spinal cord.

Neuralink, another of Elon Musk’s companies, held its Show & Tell on Wednesday, and many revelations were shared in the live stream. One of those revelations included restoring vision even if someone was born blind. And also restoring full body functionality to someone with a severed spinal cord.

Elon Musk founded Neuralink to answer the question, “What do we do if there is a superintelligence that is much smarter than human beings? How do we, as a species, mitigate the risk or, in a benign scenario, go along for the ride?”

Neuralink has an amazing monkey who writes words with his brain

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, computing, Elon Musk, neuroscience

Elon Musk is trying to help the paralyzed to move again, through electrodes in the cerebral cortex.

Neuralink, the strange and somewhat vague brainchild of Elon Musk, held an event Wednesday that the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter called a “show and tell.” And show and tell it did — as a monkey welcomed the audience by typing a message through a brain-computer interface.

Neuralink’s product records action potentials of neurons in the brain. This is done by placing an electrode close enough to the synapse of two neurons in the brain and taking a recording of its electrical impulse.
