Not Incentivized Yet Efficient: Working From Home in the Public Sector https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/06/not-incentivized-yet-efficient-working-from-home-in-the-public-sector https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/06/not-incentivized-yet-efficient-working-from-home-in-the-public-sector#respond Wed, 18 Jun 2025 10:03:23 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/06/not-incentivized-yet-efficient-working-from-home-in-the-public-sector

This paper studies whether working from home (WFH) affects workers’ performance in public sector jobs. Studying public sector initiatives allows us to establish baseline estimates on the impact of WFH net of incentives. Exploiting novel administrative data and plausibly exogenous variation in work location, we find that WFH increases productivity by 12%. These productivity gains are primarily driven by reduced distractions. They are not explained by differences in quality, shift length, or task allocation. The productivity gains more than double when tasks are assigned by the supervisor.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Thursday touted the use of robotics in his pitch for an American “manufacturing renaissance.”

The big picture: While President Trump’s tariffs are meant to boost American manufacturing and jobs, U.S. manufacturers will likely hurt from these tariffs, at least in the short run. Whether they lead to more jobs in the long term remains an open question.

What he’s saying: Lutnick made the case in several TV interviews this week that tariffs will bring jobs and factories back to the U.S., saying they’ll utilize robotics to make American workers “more efficient.”

As part of the expansion, Yaskawa will begin manufacturing robots in Franklin. The company purchased a more than 200,000-square-foot building in Franklin in 2023 for $20 million. The site was previously used by a packaging company.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. is supporting the project with up to $18 million dollars in tax credits. Officials say the amount of credits awarded will be contingent upon hitting job creation and investment targets.

In a statement, Gov. Tony Evers said the expansion would bring millions of dollars of investment and hundreds of “high-quality” jobs to southeast Wisconsin.

Major funding milestone for world-first prototype fusion plant https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/06/major-funding-milestone-for-world-first-prototype-fusion-plant https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/06/major-funding-milestone-for-world-first-prototype-fusion-plant#respond Sat, 14 Jun 2025 19:02:23 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2025/06/major-funding-milestone-for-world-first-prototype-fusion-plant

The government has announced a record ÂŁ2.5 billion investment in fusion energy, which includes support for a prototype fusion energy plant in Nottinghamshire.

The new prototype plant, known as STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) will be built at the site of the former West Burton A coal power station near Retford and Gainsborough. The site was chosen by the government in 2022 as the location for the project, with the project’s delivery expected to create over 10,000 jobs ranging from construction to operations. The announcement shows the government’s firm commitment to becoming a “clean energy superpower” by turbocharging innovation in an area that’s produced conventional power for generations.

The record funding for fusion research announced this week shows the UK government’s firm commitment to clean, sustainable energy.
