Cloud Imperium Games, the developer of sci-fi epic Star Citizen, has released a breathtaking video showcasing the game engine’s capabilities.

Having entered pre-production in 2010, and first been made public in 2012, Star Citizen’s development is one of the longest-running of any game. It has generated both controversy and scepticism, due to this prolonged creation time, frequent delays, and the constant expansion of its scope, which has led some to question the feasibility of the project.

Despite these issues, the work-in-progress game has amassed a huge fanbase and unprecedented crowdfunding success. At half a billion dollars, it ranks as the highest crowdfunded video game and one of the highest-funded crowdfunding projects of any kind.

Computing giant IBM has launched three new innovations in quantum tech – the first utility-scale quantum computer, the first 1,000+ qubit chip and the most efficient quantum processor in terms of error correction.

IBM gave a sneak preview of its Quantum System Two during a conference last year. Following 12 months of additional research and development, it has now officially launched the system, which is described as “the first modular, utility-scale quantum computer.”

1,000+ Qubit Quantum Computer Announced https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/1000-qubit-quantum-computer-announced https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/1000-qubit-quantum-computer-announced#respond Tue, 31 Oct 2023 04:23:35 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/1000-qubit-quantum-computer-announced

California-based startup Atom Computing has announced a 1,225-qubit quantum computer, the first to break the 1,000+ barrier, which it plans to release in 2024.

Quantum bits, or qubits, are the basic units of information in quantum computing – equivalent to bits in classical computing. Unlike bits, however, qubits can exist in multiple states simultaneously, allowing them to perform calculations that would take millions of years for an ordinary computer.

Breakthrough in treatment of cervical cancer https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/breakthrough-in-treatment-of-cervical-cancer https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/breakthrough-in-treatment-of-cervical-cancer#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2023 19:22:23 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/breakthrough-in-treatment-of-cervical-cancer

A breakthrough in treating cervical cancer is reported, with participants in a recent trial achieving a five-year survival rate of 80% – up from the previous average of 70%. The study used a combination of existing, cheap drugs ahead of usual radiotherapy treatment.

Phase III of the INTERLACE trial, funded by Cancer Research UK and University College London (UCL) Cancer Trials Centre, assessed whether a short course of induction chemotherapy (IC) prior to chemoradiation (CRT) could reduce the rate of relapse and death among patients with cervical cancer. Researchers involved in the study presented the preliminary results at the recent European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) congress.

Its energy efficiency is just mind-blowing,” said Damien Querlioz, a nanoelectronics researcher at the University of Paris-Saclay in Palaiseau. “I feel the paper will shake the common thinking in computer architecture.

NorthPole, a new edge-based processor announced this month by IBM Research, is up to 22 times faster and much more energy efficient than chips currently on the market.

A team from IBM research has presented NorthPole – a brain-inspired chip architecture, which blends computation with memory to process data more efficiently at low energy costs.
