Massive implications with this one.

It’s been a rough few days in the condensed matter physics realm following claims of the world’s first room-temperature superconductor being achieved. However, work to verify and replicate the results.

Big Tech was moving cautiously on AI. Then came ChatGPT https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/01/big-tech-was-moving-cautiously-on-ai-then-came-chatgpt Sun, 29 Jan 2023 03:22:38 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/01/big-tech-was-moving-cautiously-on-ai-then-came-chatgpt

Welcome to the exponential upward curve phase of the Technological Singularity, folks.

Three months before ChatGPT debuted in November, Facebook’s parent company Meta released a similar chatbot. But unlike the phenomenon that ChatGPT instantly became, with more than a million users in its first five days, Meta’s Blenderbot was boring, said Meta’s chief artificial intelligence scientist, Yann LeCun.

“The reason it was boring was because it was made safe,” LeCun said last week at a forum hosted by AI consulting company Collective[i]. He blamed the tepid public response on Meta being “overly careful about content moderation,” like directing the chatbot to change the subject if a user asked about religion. ChatGPT, on the other hand, will converse about the concept of falsehoods in the Quran, write a prayer for a rabbi to deliver to Congress and compare God to a flyswatter.

Lockheed Martin’s fusion-powered fighter and bomber plans https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/10/lockheed-martins-fusion-powered-fighter-and-bomber-plans Mon, 31 Oct 2022 19:22:29 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/10/lockheed-martins-fusion-powered-fighter-and-bomber-plans

A fascinating new look at the patents and defense projects in the US Military and its hopefully fusion powered future. (FUSION POWER: Only 20 years away for the last 40 years!! 😉)

Back in 2018, Lockheed Martin filed a patent for something it called a “plasma confinement system” — a device small enough to fit inside the fuselage of an F-16 Fighting Falcon that is capable of managing internal temperatures 10 times hotter than the center of the sun.

This scalable device was designed to play a vital role in containing an approach to power production that some still consider science fiction: nuclear fusion. Now, recent advancements in the field are making fusion power look not just possible, but potentially even feasible. In the coming years, fusion could not only change everything about the way the world fights wars… it could even change the way humanity approaches conflict itself.

And it all might start within the shadowy confines of the Pentagon’s black budget.

A new era of space travel | DW Documentary https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/09/a-new-era-of-space-travel-dw-documentary Sun, 25 Sep 2022 00:23:00 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/09/a-new-era-of-space-travel-dw-documentary

A great overview of the current state of the space industry and where it is headed in the near future.

A revolution in the history of space travel took off on 20 July 2021. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos flew in his rocket 106 kilometers into outer space. It may have only lasted around 10 minutes, but the trip was the precursor to commercial passenger flights into space.

The Bezos flight, as well as the one billionaire Richard Branson took just a few days earlier, herald a new era of space travel. This looks to be just the beginning of a rekindled space race. Observers suspect it could open up a lucrative market for space tourism. They’re also convinced that the next step will be inevitable: the establishment of human colonies in space. At some point, the day may come when the first person is born in space — or perhaps when humans reach Mars.

The film explores the fluctuations in space technology and the hype around commercial space flights — a topic that’s of great interest to Tesla founder Elon Musk, who founded the aerospace company SpaceX. Predicting the outcome of these developments is tricky. Musk has, in any case, announced plans to make humanity “multiplanetary. According to him, that involves colonizing Mars and enabling life on other planets. Branson and Bezos, on the other hand, are “more interested in how we can use space to help Earth.

Billionaires going on trips into space — is this really progress? Or is it all just about spending lots and lots money? These are questions we’re not yet able to answer.

AI’s prediction of what last selfies on Earth would look like are total nightmare fuel https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/07/ais-prediction-of-what-last-selfies-on-earth-would-look-like-are-total-nightmare-fuel Sun, 31 Jul 2022 23:22:19 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/07/ais-prediction-of-what-last-selfies-on-earth-would-look-like-are-total-nightmare-fuel

🤔 I certainly hope not!

An artificial intelligence program asked to predict what “the last selfie ever taken” would look like resulted in several nightmarish images.

TikTok account Robot Overloards, which dedicates its page to providing viewers with “daily disturbing AI generated images,” uploaded a video on Sunday where the AI DALL-E was asked to predict what the last selfies on Earth would look like.

The images produced showed bloody, mutilated humans taking selfies amongst apocalyptic scenes. One “selfie” shows a skeleton-like man holding the camera for a selfie with dark hills on fire and smoke in the air behind him.

Brain wave-scanning helmet developed by scientists to help Chinese censors better detect porn https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/06/brain-wave-scanning-helmet-developed-by-scientists-to-help-chinese-censors-better-detect-porn Tue, 21 Jun 2022 21:22:20 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/06/brain-wave-scanning-helmet-developed-by-scientists-to-help-chinese-censors-better-detect-porn

Oh joy. I’d ask snarkaly what could possibly go wrong, but in this case going right IS going wrong, so… 🤯

Chinese scientists have reportedly developed and tested a device that aims to help online censors better police pornography in the country.

Researchers at Beijing Jiaotong University in China created a helmet that can track the brain waves of its wearers. The scientists published their findings in the domestic peer-reviewed Journal of Electronic Measurement and Instrumentation earlier this month.

In China, where watching porn is illegal, the government employs mostly women as so-called porn appraisers, or “jian huang shi,” who screen online photo and video content. These human censors make use of artificial intelligence (A.I.) to help them in flagging explicit content faster.

Sean Brazell is feeling thoughtful.

A short but recently released cryonics piece from the BBC focused on Alcor, a foundation based in the state of Arizona here in the United States. It runs the largest cryonics patient storage facility on earth, alongside it’s in-house research labs. It also helps fund many external research efforts around the world, including the funding of R&D in university medical and engineering research programs, as well as at both private and public corporate research facilities.
