A game-changer in prosthetics has been introduced to the world, and for the first time, amputees are regaining sensation through an electrical signal from their prosthetic arm. Max Ortiz-Catalan, a professor of bionics, explains the process of implanting these mind-controlled bionic arms through direct skeletal attachment. The researcher takes us through every step of this groundbreaking advancement in bionic medicine, from surgically implanting electrodes to fitting the prosthesis and training for everyday use.\r\

Surprisingly, OpenAI is getting ready to pay tens of millions to publishers for using their content to train ChatGPT, amid reports that it’s getting dumber https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/surprisingly-openai-is-getting-ready-to-pay-tens-of-millions-to-publishers-for-using-their-content-to-train-chatgpt-amid-reports-that-its-getting-dumber https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/surprisingly-openai-is-getting-ready-to-pay-tens-of-millions-to-publishers-for-using-their-content-to-train-chatgpt-amid-reports-that-its-getting-dumber#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2023 11:22:26 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/surprisingly-openai-is-getting-ready-to-pay-tens-of-millions-to-publishers-for-using-their-content-to-train-chatgpt-amid-reports-that-its-getting-dumber

If the deal with German publisher Axel Springer pulls through, it’s highly likely that reports citing ChatGPT’s decline in accuracy will reduce significantly. OpenAI will also get access current and archived news articles across the publisher’s brands, which it will use to train its LLMs. The chatbots will also refer back to the original source to provide absolute transparency to users. And since its a mutual partnership, Axel Springer will also leverage OpenAI’s resources to further enhance and improve its products.

What are your thoughts on OpenAI’s first attempt to compensate publishers and websites for using their content to train its AI models? Let us know in the comments.

PlayStation Will Delete Purchased Discovery Shows https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/playstation-will-delete-purchased-discovery-shows https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/playstation-will-delete-purchased-discovery-shows#respond Sat, 09 Dec 2023 08:23:21 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/playstation-will-delete-purchased-discovery-shows

The negative side of not having it on a disk or flash drive.

Sony announced on Monday that it would remove all Discovery content, including shows like “MythBusters” and “Deadliest Catch,” from user libraries, even if they had been purchased on the PlayStation Store.

The company, which owns and operates PlayStation game consoles, said in a brief statement that the Discovery shows would be deleted on Dec. 31, attributing the decision to “our content licensing arrangements with content providers.”

The move came as Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns Discovery content, is seeking to add more subscribers to its Max and Discovery+ streaming services, in competition with others like Netflix and Disney+.

Stress Changes More Genes in the Mouse Brain Than a Head Injury https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/stress-changes-more-genes-in-the-mouse-brain-than-a-head-injury https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/stress-changes-more-genes-in-the-mouse-brain-than-a-head-injury#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2023 01:25:36 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/12/stress-changes-more-genes-in-the-mouse-brain-than-a-head-injury

So our experiences or how we handle those experiences may have an effect on the expression of genes in our body.

A surprising thing happened when researchers began exploring whether early-life stress compounds the effects of a childhood head injury on health and behavior later in life: In an animal study, stress changed the activation level of many more genes in the brain than were changed by a bump to the head.

It’s already known that head injuries are common in young kids, especially from falling, and can be linked to mood disorders and social difficulties that emerge later in life. Adverse childhood experiences are also very common, and can raise risk for disease, mental illness and substance misuse in adulthood.

“But we don’t know how those two things can interact,” said senior study author Kathryn Lenz, associate professor of psychology at The Ohio State University. “We wanted to understand whether experiencing a traumatic brain injury in the context of early life stress circumstances could modulate the response to the brain injury. And using an animal model allows us to really get into the mechanisms through which these two things might be impacting brain development as it’s occurring.”

Backlash on using AI to redub video game lines.

Naruto’s latest fighting game faces criticism for some questionable voiceover lines, leading to accusations of AI manipulation.

Naruto X Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is the newest brawler based on the hugely popular anime series (which itself adapts the hugely popular manga). Rather than purely adapting one part of the anime, however, Naruto X Boruto skims through almost the entire saga and adapts events already covered in previous games. But when comparing the new game’s dub to those previous entries, fans have been left confused.

AI can be used to make our lives easier, but it is also a frightening tool that could see many of us out of a job – at least according to some experts.

Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) CEO Kylie Walker told The Canberra Times AI could replace anywhere between 25 and 46 percent of all Aussie jobs by 2030.

Walker, and a group of 13 other AI experts, called for a $1 billion national artificial intelligence initiative in a new report to push out more than 100,000 digitally skilled workers over the next decade.

Exclusive: OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster, sources say https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/11/exclusive-openai-researchers-warned-board-of-ai-breakthrough-ahead-of-ceo-ouster-sources-say https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/11/exclusive-openai-researchers-warned-board-of-ai-breakthrough-ahead-of-ceo-ouster-sources-say#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 02:24:10 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/11/exclusive-openai-researchers-warned-board-of-ai-breakthrough-ahead-of-ceo-ouster-sources-say

Nov 22 (Reuters) — Ahead of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s four days in exile, several staff researchers sent the board of directors a letter warning of a powerful artificial intelligence discovery that they said could threaten humanity, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The previously unreported letter and AI algorithm was a key development ahead of the board’s ouster of Altman, the poster child of generative AI, the two sources said. Before his triumphant return late Tuesday, more than 700 employees had threatened to quit and join backer Microsoft (MSFT.O) in solidarity with their fired leader.

The sources cited the letter as one factor among a longer list of grievances by the board that led to Altman’s firing. Reuters was unable to review a copy of the letter. The researchers who wrote the letter did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Real Reason Sam Altman was FIRED From OpenAI https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/11/the-real-reason-sam-altman-was-fired-from-openai https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/11/the-real-reason-sam-altman-was-fired-from-openai#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2023 02:23:12 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/11/the-real-reason-sam-altman-was-fired-from-openai

OpenAI is in discussions with Sam Altman to return to the company as its CEO, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. One of them said Altman, who was suddenly fired by the board on Friday with no notice, is “ambivalent” about coming back and would want significant governance changes. There have been some leaks on the real reason Sam Altman was fired from OpenAI’s largest investor, Microsoft, said in a statement shortly after Altman’s firing that the company “remains committed” to its partnership with the AI firm. However, OpenAI’s investors weren’t given advance warning or opportunity to weigh in on the board’s decision to remove Altman. As the face of the company and the most prominent voice in AI, his removal throws the future of OpenAI into uncertainty at a time when rivals are racing to catch up with the unprecedented rise of ChatGPT.
