How do we feel about this Lifeboat?

The long read: When a microbe was found munching on a plastic bottle in a rubbish dump, it promised a recycling revolution. Now scientists are attempting to turbocharge those powers in a bid to solve our waste crisis. But will it work?

Astronomers hopeful of receiving an alien reply today after beaming message out into space 40 years ago https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/08/astronomers-hopeful-of-receiving-an-alien-reply-today-after-beaming-message-out-into-space-40-years-ago Tue, 22 Aug 2023 16:26:09 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/08/astronomers-hopeful-of-receiving-an-alien-reply-today-after-beaming-message-out-into-space-40-years-ago

Why didn’t they send pictures instead of a kid’s drawings? I would be embarrassed to send those to anyone to explain the origin of our species.

Narusawa, 58, believes intelligent life lingers somewhere in the universe, and it’s possible a planet in Altair’s solar system could be harboring intelligent extraterrestrial life.

“Altair may have a planet whose environment can sustain life,” he told the outlet.

An exoplanet is any planet outside our solar system orbiting a star — though there are free-floating exoplanets called “rogue planets” that are untethered in space, according to NASA.

Bury an Egg and Banana in Your Garden and Boost Your Plants https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/08/bury-an-egg-and-banana-in-your-garden-and-boost-your-plants Tue, 22 Aug 2023 16:25:54 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/08/bury-an-egg-and-banana-in-your-garden-and-boost-your-plants

Wow what a great story.

Although I typically use them in the kitchen, I’ve discovered that eggs and bananas can also be useful in the garden.

Given that these food items are intended for consumption rather than gardening, it could seem weird.

However, the truth is that both bananas and eggs can do wonders for plants, and you don’t need to be a skilled gardener with a green thumb to succeed with them.

So if I understand this…send a bot to catch a bot?

Israeli tech start-up Cyabra, which worked with Elon Musk to evaluate the presence of bots on Twitter, released a new tool that can detect AI-generated text, images and profiles.

Juno data indicates ‘sprites’ or ’elves’ frolic in Jupiter’s atmosphere https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/10/juno-data-indicates-sprites-or-elves-frolic-in-jupiters-atmosphere Fri, 30 Oct 2020 08:46:09 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/10/juno-data-indicates-sprites-or-elves-frolic-in-jupiters-atmosphere

New results from NASA’s Juno mission at Jupiter suggest that either “sprites” or “elves” could be dancing in the upper atmosphere of the solar system’s largest planet. It is the first time these bright, unpredictable and extremely brief flashes of light—formally known as transient luminous events, or TLE’s—have been observed on another world. The findings were published on Oct. 27, 2020, in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.

Scientists predicted these bright, superfast flashes of light should also be present in Jupiter’s immense roiling atmosphere, but their existence remained theoretical. Then, in the summer of 2019, researchers working with data from Juno’s ultraviolet spectrograph instrument (UVS) discovered something unexpected: a bright, narrow streak of ultraviolet emission that disappeared in a flash.

“UVS was designed to characterize Jupiter’s beautiful northern and southern lights,” said Giles, a Juno scientist and the lead author of the paper. “But we discovered UVS images that not only showed Jovian aurora, but also a bright flash of UV light over in the corner where it wasn’t supposed to be. The more our team looked into it, the more we realized Juno may have detected a TLE on Jupiter.”

Potty training: NASA tests new $23M titanium space toilet https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/10/potty-training-nasa-tests-new-23m-titanium-space-toilet Fri, 02 Oct 2020 16:26:51 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/10/potty-training-nasa-tests-new-23m-titanium-space-toilet

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s first new space potty in decades — a $23 million titanium toilet better suited for women — is getting a not-so-dry run at the International Space Station before eventually flying to the moon.

It’s packed inside a cargo ship that should have blasted off late Thursday from Wallops Island, Virginia. But the launch was aborted with just two minutes remaining in the countdown. Northrop Grumman said it would try again Friday night if engineers can figure out what went wrong.

Barely 100 pounds (45 kilograms) and just 28 inches (71 centimeters) tall, the new toilet is roughly half as big as the two Russian-built ones at the space station. It’s more camper-size to fit into the NASA Orion capsules that will carry astronauts to the moon in a few years.
