Boeing Starliner flights to the ISS cost NASA more than twice what they pay SpaceX to ferry astronauts.

NASA confirmed Wednesday that it has awarded five additional crew transportation missions to SpaceX, and its Crew Dragon vehicle, to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station. This brings to 14 the total number of crewed missions that SpaceX is contracted to fly for NASA through 2030.

As previously reported by Ars, these are likely the final flights NASA needs to keep the space station fully occupied into the year 2030. While there are no international agreements yet signed, NASA has signaled that it would like to continue flying the orbiting laboratory until 2030, by which time one or more US commercial space stations should be operational in low Earth orbit.

Will AR Smart Glasses Replace Smartphones and Become our Personal Buddy Bots? https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/09/will-ar-smart-glasses-replace-smartphones-and-become-our-personal-buddy-bots Thu, 01 Sep 2022 17:22:59 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/09/will-ar-smart-glasses-replace-smartphones-and-become-our-personal-buddy-bots

When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007, no one understood at the time how disruptive that device would be to existing technology. Now with rumors of Apple launching their augmented reality (AR) smart glasses products next year, people are speculating about how disruptive this technology will be.

Since iPhones are one of Apple’s primary revenue streams, they may be cautious about releasing a product that may encroach on their own turf. However, as we’ll suggest below, it may not be an either/or situation for users.

If You Are a “Doctor Who” Fan Then You Know About the Silurians https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/08/if-you-are-a-doctor-who-fan-then-you-know-about-the-silurians Wed, 31 Aug 2022 21:23:32 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/08/if-you-are-a-doctor-who-fan-then-you-know-about-the-silurians

The Silurian Hypothesis is not a work of science fiction. It was proposed by two scientists who posed a thought question about how would we know if a previous civilization rose and fell in Earth’s past.

Would we know the signs in geological records dating millions of years if an advanced technical civilization once existed on this planet?

Maersk Earmarks $2.1 Billion for Ships That Will Run on Methanol https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/08/maersk-earmarks-2-1-billion-for-ships-that-will-run-on-methanol Tue, 30 Aug 2022 19:23:36 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/08/maersk-earmarks-2-1-billion-for-ships-that-will-run-on-methanol

You are looking at a methanol-fed hydrogen fuel cell that may soon be powering marine shipping around the world.

For Maersk, the 12 new ships will help it reduce CO2 emissions by 1.5 million tons annually or 4% of what the company produced in total in 2021. Maersk’s announced commitment is for all future new builds to only burn carbon-neutral fuels. That’s why fuel cells are high on its list of technologies to make that achievement possible.

Methanol Fuel Cells Are a Step Better Than Burning Methanol

A Bill Gates-backed investment group, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, is bankrolling a new Danish company, Blue World Technologies, with plans to produce methanol and high-temperature fuel cells. It has plans to produce enough of the fuel and the fuel cells to power five container ships this year, and ten times that number by 2024.

Americans keep moving to where the water isn’t and where extreme weather is becoming the norm.

People are still flocking to Sunbelt regions where the housing is cheaper and plentiful — but climate change and extreme weather are worsening.

He Great Drought and Deluge is upon much of the world. These are no longer once-in-a-thousand-year events.

Want a Good Reason to Capture Carbon Dioxide? — Use It to Power the Electrical Grid https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/08/want-a-good-reason-to-capture-carbon-dioxide-use-it-to-power-the-electrical-grid Sun, 28 Aug 2022 19:23:35 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/08/want-a-good-reason-to-capture-carbon-dioxide-use-it-to-power-the-electrical-grid

Steam turbines could be replaced by pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) closed-loop systems to spin turbines.

Steam turbines in thermal power generation are today’s standard. But pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) in a closed-loop system could do the job. Supercritical CO2 acting as both a liquid and a gas under extreme pressure would provide the impetus to spin a turbine. Using supercritical CO2 may prove to be far more efficient than steam to provide emissions-free power to the electrical grid. Energy input coming from renewable sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, as well as nuclear power, or even gas or coal-fired thermal energy power plants with accompanying carbon capture technology could be combined with this technology to be an effective addition to energy utilities.

Recently researchers at the Sandia National Laboratory Kirtland Air Force Base in the United States demonstrated a closed-loop Brayton Cycle engine technology as it delivered power to the electrical grid continuously. Sandia has been working with the Brayton Cycle technology for power generation for some time now because it is seen as having significant energy conversion advantages over conventional steam turbines by as much as 50%.

In the US growing building sector carbon emissions a threat to 2050 net-zero goal.

U.S. economywide greenhouse gas emissions fell 12% from 2005 to 2019, but direct emissions from the building sector were higher, according to an Information Technology and Innovation Foundation report this week.
