It’s not a stretch to say that stretchable sensors could change the way soft robots function and feel. In fact, they will be able to feel quite a lot.

Cornell researchers have created a fiber-optic sensor that combines low-cost LEDs and dyes, resulting in a stretchable “skin” that detects deformations such as pressure, bending and strain. This sensor could give soft robotic systems – and anyone using augmented reality technology – the ability to feel the same rich, tactile sensations that mammals depend on to navigate the natural world.

Students Invent Bacteria That Eat Plastic From The Oceans And Turn It Into Water https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/09/students-invent-bacteria-that-eat-plastic-from-the-oceans-and-turn-it-into-water Fri, 06 Sep 2019 17:22:27 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/09/students-invent-bacteria-that-eat-plastic-from-the-oceans-and-turn-it-into-water

The high pollution in the oceans is a big problem on the planet. According to recent research, it is likely that in the year 2050 we will find more plastic than fish in the waters of the seas, and for this reason there are many people working to generate solutions to this problem, some very imaginative to reverse this situation.

Mysterious iOS Attack Changes Everything We Know About iPhone Hacking https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/mysterious-ios-attack-changes-everything-we-know-about-iphone-hacking Sat, 31 Aug 2019 01:10:27 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/mysterious-ios-attack-changes-everything-we-know-about-iphone-hacking

Hacking the iPhone has long been considered a rarified endeavor, undertaken by sophisticated nation-states against only their most high-value targets. But a discovery by a group of Google researchers has turned that notion on its head: For two years, someone has been exploiting a rich collection of iPhone vulnerabilities with anything but restraint or careful targeting. And they’ve indiscriminately hacked thousands of iPhones just by getting them to visit a website.

Abstract

In spring 2019, a group of nearly 200 military, government, academic, and private industry experts in various areas of electromagnetic defense gathered for the second Electromagnetic Defense Task Force (EDTF) summit. During this time a full analytical and technical review was initiated on the recently released report titled “High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse and the Bulk Power System: Potential Impacts and Mitigation Strategies” authored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). This essay outlines the strengths and weaknesses of the report and aims to generate further discussion among industry, policy makers, military, and academia to ensure the nation is adequately prepared for any potential electromagnetic event.

Amazon, Microsoft, ‘putting world at risk of killer AI’: study https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/amazon-microsoft-putting-world-at-risk-of-killer-ai-study Thu, 22 Aug 2019 16:43:49 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/amazon-microsoft-putting-world-at-risk-of-killer-ai-study

Washington (AFP) — Amazon, Microsoft and Intel are among leading tech companies putting the world at risk through killer robot development, according to a report that surveyed major players from the sector about their stance on lethal autonomous weapons.

Dutch NGO Pax ranked 50 companies by three criteria: whether they were developing technology that could be relevant to deadly AI, whether they were working on related military projects, and if they had committed to abstaining from contributing in the future.

“Why are companies like Microsoft and Amazon not denying that they’re currently developing these highly controversial weapons, which could decide to kill people without direct human involvement?” said Frank Slijper, lead author of the report published this week.

Japan warns North Korea now has miniaturized nukes https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/japan-warns-north-korea-now-has-miniaturized-nukes Wed, 21 Aug 2019 18:04:01 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/japan-warns-north-korea-now-has-miniaturized-nukes

North Korea has miniaturised nuclear warheads and made them small enough to fit on ballistic missiles, Japan believes.

Tokyo defence chiefs warn in a new white paper that North Korea’s military activities pose a ‘serious and imminent threat’.

In last year’s report Japan said it was ‘possible’ that North Korea had achieved miniaturisation, but Tokyo now appears to have upgraded its assessment, according to Japanese newspaper Yomiuri.

Elon Musk back to promoting bombing Mars with nuclear weapons https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/elon-musk-back-to-promoting-bombing-mars-with-nuclear-weapons Wed, 21 Aug 2019 18:03:42 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/elon-musk-back-to-promoting-bombing-mars-with-nuclear-weapons

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk not only wants to explore Mars, he wants to ‘nuke’ it.

In a tweet this week, Musk reiterated calls to ‘Nuke Mars!’ adding that t-shirts are ‘coming soon.’

Jarring though the idea may be, the tweet is a re-hash of an idea championed by Musk in the past that proposes using a nuclear weapon to terraform the red planet for human habitation.

A 3D map of stars reveals the Milky Way’s warped shape https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/a-3d-map-of-stars-reveals-the-milky-ways-warped-shape Fri, 02 Aug 2019 20:02:26 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/08/a-3d-map-of-stars-reveals-the-milky-ways-warped-shape

Like a misshapen potato chip, our home galaxy is warped. A new 3D map brings the contorted structure of the Milky Way’s disk into better view, thanks to measurements of special stars called Cepheids, scientists report in the Aug. 2 Science.

Making 3D measurements of the galaxy requires estimating how far away stars are from Earth, typically a matter of guesswork. But unlike other stars, Cepheids vary in brightness over time in a particular way that can be used to determine a precise distance to each star.

Although the Milky Way’s disk is usually depicted as flat, previous observations had revealed that the galaxy is curved at its edges. The new study shows that that the Milky Way is even more warped than scientists had thought, says astronomer Dorota Skowron of the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw. If you took a spaceship into deep space and looked back at our galaxy, says Skowron, “you could see by eye” that it’s misshapen.

Microsoft Invests $1 Billion to Create a World-Saving AI https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/07/microsoft-invests-1-billion-to-create-a-world-saving-ai Wed, 24 Jul 2019 00:22:39 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/07/microsoft-invests-1-billion-to-create-a-world-saving-ai

Whether or not creating an AGI is even possible remains up for debate. Meanwhile, others may cringe at the thought of an AI with the intellect to match and exceed humanity. However, OpenAI has been bullish on the prospect. The company points to the breakthroughs researchers have made in last decade in getting AI algorithms to recognize images, translate languages, and control robots. One of OpenAI’s own AI projects can write fiction like a human can (sort of).

However, creating new AI-based technologies costs a lot of money. Not only does it require programming, but also renting access to thousands of servers. So OpenAI has been seeking funding. “The most obvious way to cover costs is to build a product, but that would mean changing our focus. Instead, we intend to license some of our pre-AGI technologies, with Microsoft becoming our preferred partner for commercializing them,” Altman wrote in a separate blog post.

  • The AI Breakthrough Will Require Researchers Burying Their Hatchets.
