Invisible structures generated by gravitational interactions in the Solar System have created a “space superhighway” network, astronomers have discovered.

These channels enable the fast travel of objects through space, and could be harnessed for our own space exploration purposes, as well as the study of comets and asteroids.

By applying analyses to both observational and simulation data, a team of researchers led by Nataša Todorović of Belgrade Astronomical Observatory in Serbia observed that these superhighways consist of a series of connected arches inside these invisible structures, called space manifolds — and each planet generates its own manifolds, together creating what the researchers have called “a true celestial autobahn”.

Neanderthal genes may be to blame in some severe coronavirus cases https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/10/neanderthal-genes-may-be-to-blame-in-some-severe-coronavirus-cases Fri, 02 Oct 2020 18:22:19 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/10/neanderthal-genes-may-be-to-blame-in-some-severe-coronavirus-cases

Genes inherited from Neanderthal ancestors may be involved in some cases of severe Covid-19 disease, researchers in Germany reported Wednesday.

A team of experts on Neanderthal genetics examined a strand of DNA that has been associated with some of the more serious cases of Covid-19 and compared it to sequences known to have been passed down to living Europeans and Asians from Neanderthal ancestors.

The DNA strand is found on chromosome 3, and a team of researchers in Europe has linked certain variations in this sequence with the risk of being more severely ill with Covid-19.

Physicist: The Entire Universe Might Be a Neural Network https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/09/physicist-the-entire-universe-might-be-a-neural-network Fri, 11 Sep 2020 05:22:17 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/09/physicist-the-entire-universe-might-be-a-neural-network

I’ve felt this might be true for many years. There’s obviously nothing inherently biological about neural networks. It could even explain the development of intelligent life when so many things work against that development — the universe is driven to try to create intelligence — a form of “intelligent design.”

We live inside a neural network, he says, not a simulation — “but we might never know the difference.”

A merger with a black hole possessing an unexplained ‘forbidden mass’ created the first conclusive example of an intermediate black hole in the most massive merger ever detected using ripples in spacetime.

The psychology of phishing: why do we fall for terrible email scams? https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/09/the-psychology-of-phishing-why-do-we-fall-for-terrible-email-scams Fri, 04 Sep 2020 18:22:19 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/09/the-psychology-of-phishing-why-do-we-fall-for-terrible-email-scams

This is an article from 2014, but it’s interesting — especially for why phishing emails are so lame. Money quote:

‘The answer is that the implausibility is a useful tool for the scammers. An entirely believable email would get millions of people falling for the bait – most of whom would catch on later when the scammers started requesting private banking details. This way, the fraudsters can avoid wasting their time on no-hopers, knowing that any replies they do receive are … See More.

Maybe your bank wants you to update your password; maybe a new Facebook friend wants to show you a funny web page. Maybe a Nigerian lawyer wants to pass on a legacy from a long-lost relative.

What all of these people are really after, of course, are your password, bank details and, ultimately money. Such phishing scams, says Microsoft, are costing the world as much as $5bn a year. For some reason, the UK is a favourite hunting ground for the phishers: here, says security firm Proofpoint, unsolicited email is almost three times more likely to contain a malicious link than in the US.

But who falls for these scams? Well, you do. While it’s easy to assume that only the technologically illiterate will be vulnerable, new research shows that in fact the reverse is true.

Why Ford Wants Robot Dogs Running Through Its Plants https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/08/why-ford-wants-robot-dogs-running-through-its-plants Wed, 26 Aug 2020 21:31:19 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/08/why-ford-wants-robot-dogs-running-through-its-plants

But Ford appears to have found a unique way to use a robot. We’ve seen some interesting applications for Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot, and the latest takes the 70-pound dog-like robot to the floors of a Ford transmission manufacturing plant.

These plants are reportedly so old — and have been re-tooled so many times — that Ford is unsure as to whether it possesses accurate floor plans. With an end goal of modernizing and retooling these plants, Ford is using Spot’s laser scanning and imaging technology to travel the plants so they can produce a detailed map.

According to TechCrunch, the manual facility mapping process is time-intensive, with lots of stops and starts as cameras are set up and repositioned station to station. By using two continuously roving robots, Ford can do the job in about half the time. The other benefit is Spot’s size: these little critters can access areas that humans can’t easily get to, and with five cameras they can sometimes provide a more complete picture of their surroundings.
