There are few environments as unforgiving as the ocean. Its unpredictable weather patterns and limitations in terms of communications have left large.

Former Valve economist calls Facebook’s metaverse ‘a Steam-like digital economy’ with Zuckerberg as its ‘techno-lord’ https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/02/former-valve-economist-calls-facebooks-metaverse-a-steam-like-digital-economy-with-zuckerberg-as-its-techno-lord Tue, 01 Feb 2022 22:42:20 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/02/former-valve-economist-calls-facebooks-metaverse-a-steam-like-digital-economy-with-zuckerberg-as-its-techno-lord

Yanis Varoufakis also discussed “pay-to-earn” and the blockchain’s long-term consequences.

Former Greek Finance Minister and one-time in-house economist at Valve, Yanis Varoufakis, gave a long and freewheeling interview to the website, the Crypto Syllabus, focusing on the blockchain, its potential and disappointments, and where it sits in the larger context of politics, surveillance, and economics.

Of particular note to PC Gamer readers is his description of his time with Valve. Varoufakis had access to Valve’s data on Steam’s nascent player-to-player marketplace in the early 2010s, which he used to advise the company and his own economics research. Describing Valve’s initial pitch to him, Varoufakis said:

Solar power excels in Turkey’s rapid shift to green energy sources https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/01/solar-power-excels-in-turkeys-rapid-shift-to-green-energy-sources Tue, 18 Jan 2022 20:23:07 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/01/solar-power-excels-in-turkeys-rapid-shift-to-green-energy-sources

See, when there is no hypocrisy of being an oil tycoon nation, talking to much in conferences about environmental incentives whilst having a double agenda which consists of slowing the trend down, or doing nothing while we get to 2030.

IT ACTUALLY WORKS

Turkey’s rapid shift to greener sources of energy has led to a sharp rise in its installed solar power over the last decade, with renewable investments expected to accelerate in the period ahead.

The aim to generate a larger share of power from renewable sources stems from the country’s goal of lowing its hefty energy bill, as it imports almost all of its energy needs from abroad.

Its journey of producing energy from solar power started at just 40 megawatts (MW) back in 2014. It has now reached 7,816 megawatts, according to data compiled from the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry.

There’s a Hidden Mathematical ‘Law’ in The Sand Megaripples Found All Over Earth https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/01/theres-a-hidden-mathematical-law-in-the-sand-megaripples-found-all-over-earth Mon, 17 Jan 2022 23:24:20 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/01/theres-a-hidden-mathematical-law-in-the-sand-megaripples-found-all-over-earth

Universal law always works perfectly well.

Wherever there is sand and an atmosphere, prevailing winds may whip the grains into undulating shapes, pleasing to the eye with their calming repetition.

Certain sand waves, with wavelengths between 30 centimeters (almost 12 inches) and several meters (around 30 feet), are known as megaripples: they’re between ordinary beach ripples and full dunes in size, and we’ve seen them not just on Earth, but even on other planets such as Mars, well known for its all-encompassing dust storms.

Aside from their size, a key characteristic of these middle-ground ripples is the grain size involved – a surface of coarse grains over an interior of much finer material. Yet this mix of grains is never the same, and nor are the winds that blow across the sand to create the ripples in the first place.

Tuning a Magnetic Fluid With an Electric Field Creates Complex Controllable Dissipative Patterns https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/01/tuning-a-magnetic-fluid-with-an-electric-field-creates-complex-controllable-dissipative-patterns Sun, 16 Jan 2022 23:22:45 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2022/01/tuning-a-magnetic-fluid-with-an-electric-field-creates-complex-controllable-dissipative-patterns

An electric field transforms an iron oxide nanoparticle suspension into a model for the emergence of complex dissipative structures.

Researchers at Aalto University have shown that a nanoparticle suspension can serve as a simple model for studying the formation of patterns and structures in more complicated non-equilibrium systems, such as living cells. The new system will not only be a valuable tool for studying patterning processes but also has a wide range of potential technological applications.

The mixture consists of an oily liquid carrying nanoparticles of iron oxide, which become magnetized in a magnetic field. Under the right conditions, applying a voltage across this ferrofluid causes the nanoparticles to migrate, forming a concentration gradient in the mixture. For this to work, the ferrofluid has to also include docusate, a waxy chemical that can carry charge through the fluid.

Trillion Trees https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/09/trillion-trees Wed, 16 Sep 2020 21:01:30 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/09/trillion-trees

Boosting seedling survival rates from 10% to at least 90%.

Conserving existing forests, restoring forest ecosystems and reforesting suitable lands is essential if we are to transition to a sustainable pathway for our economies and societies at the required speed and scale.

Such a transformation is the goal of 1t.org – the Trillion Tree Platform announced at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020 in Davos. Set up to support the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), 1t.org seeks to raise ambition for 1 trillion tree commitments and empower and connect a global community of innovators and ecopreneurs who are developing the needed solutions to achieve the trillion trees goal.
