“Informed consent” is a well understood legal doctrine in healthcare, requiring the healthcare provider (traditionally a doctor) to educate patients about the risks, benefits, and alternatives of any given recommended procedure or intervention, allowing the patient to make informed and “voluntary” decisions about whether to undergo the procedure.

The last time I went for a long walk in a big city and worried about being arrested was Hong Hong in the early 2000’s as China began dismantling the “one country, two systems” policies which once protected Hong Hong citizens from Chinese autocrats.

The only time before that was in Moscow in the middle 1970’s when Russia was under the dictatorship of the communist party and free movement wasn’t allowed. The communist media in Russia then, much like the Canadian media today, also felt it important to remind us that the restrictions on movement, liberty and association were for our safety, not theirs.

But I’m still gonna go for a walk past Dundas Square and Queens Park today around noon and take pictures of what I find. Wish me luck.

As US President Biden signs a national mask mandate into law, measures being imposed in the name of protecting public health could create a humanitarian crisis that sees Americans sued by the state and forced into detention camps for breaking pandemic protocols.

The very first executive order Joe Biden signed upon becoming the forty-sixth President of the United States was the national mask mandate he promised at the Democratic National Convention back in August. The order makes face coverings and social distancing mandatory on all federal property and a legal requisite for interstate commerce.

The race is on. Tech startups across the globe are competing to deliver to the rest of us what Google employees already enjoy : regular at-home COVID tests.

At-home medical testing was gaining steam pre-pandemic and is now a red-hot market with more than two dozen companies developing at-home COVID tests.

Almost a year ago, we were told by our governments and healthcare professionals that a two-week shutdown of the economy would “flatten the curve.”

The Chinese Coronavirus (COVID-19) hit American shores — officially, anyway, there is significant evidence that it arrived earlier — in late January 2020. The American public was then told that a two-week shutdown of the economy would “flatten the curve,” relieving the pressure on hospital intensive care units and saving lives in the long run.

The average American, including conservatives, being people of good faith, complied, thinking that this was a common-sense measure that would save lives in the wake of a new and mysterious pandemic.

But two things quickly happened: First, the goalposts moved. No longer was it enough to “flatten the curve.” Now we were to be locked down until there was a cure.

It’s good that they’re finally looking at the science.

The New York Times is now noting that “once most adults are immune — following natural infection or vaccination” the virus will enter its endemic phase and corona “will be no more of a threat than the common cold, according to a study published in the journal Science on Tuesday.”

Once immunity is widespread in adults, the virus rampaging across the world will come to resemble the common cold, scientists predict.

This concept is, of course, entirely different from the earlier, reviled concept of “herd immunity,” which was so successfully dismissed by the New York Times and a great many other publications of record last spring.
