True humility is rare today. It takes courage and a strong stance. It’s the story of Grigori Perelman, who proved the Poincaré conjecture — the only one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems solved by humanity. 1⃣ In 1990s, Perelman worked at UC Berkeley. Top universities tried to hire him. A hiring committee at Stanford asked him for a C.V. to include with requests for letters of recommendation. But Perelman said: “If they know my work, they don’t need my C.V. If they need my C.V., they don’t know my work.” he received several job offers. But he declined them all. 2⃣ In 2002–2003, he posted three manuscripts on arXiv where he solved the Poincare problem. On a PREPRINT server. Not in a journal! He did not care about publishing them in Nature. He did not care about getting them peer reviewed. He just wanted to make his work publicly available. Several leading math groups immediately started checking his proof. 3⃣ In 2006, he was awarded a Fields Medal for his work on the Ricci flow and Poincare conjecture. But Perelman declined it: “[The prize] was completely irrelevant for me. Everybody understood that if the proof is correct, then no other recognition is needed.” He did not attend the ceremony. He was the only person to have ever declined the prize. 4⃣ In 2010, Perelman was awarded a Millennium Prize ($1,000,000). He did not attend a ceremony in Paris as well. He considered the decision of the Clay Institute unfair because he wanted to share the prize with Richard Hamilton (who had a big influence on Perelman in 1990s). “The main reason is my disagreement with the organized mathematical community. I don’t like their decisions, I consider them UNJUST.” ❗Why I am writing all this? Because: There’s no fairness in academia. It’s unjust and often illogical. It’s full of competition and unkindness. Perelman was very sensitive to it. So, he left mathematics… IF we don’t want to lose brilliant minds like this… IF we want our kids to love science as they grow up… Then we should focus on making it a better place. Less pressure on tenure track professors. No pursuit of metrics. No emphasis on awards. More mentorship and quality research. We need it. #science #research #engineering #mathematics #scienceandtechnology

New Research May Vindicate Einstein’s Theoretical Prediction of Massless Gravitons https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/11/new-research-may-vindicate-einsteins-theoretical-prediction-of-massless-gravitons https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/11/new-research-may-vindicate-einsteins-theoretical-prediction-of-massless-gravitons#respond Tue, 05 Nov 2024 01:24:06 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/11/new-research-may-vindicate-einsteins-theoretical-prediction-of-massless-gravitons

New research sets the most stringent limit yet on the mass of the graviton, suggesting it may indeed be massless as predicted by Einstein’s theory of gravity.

https://lnkd.in/gPGP3Q3j In this article, we propose a new Feynman’s path integral approach and extend this formalism into curved spacetime and consider its possible implications for black hole physics. While still a work in progress, this model suggests that black holes, rather than representing the final stages of gravitational collapse, might contribute to the formation of new universes. We carefully examine both Schwarzschild and Kerr metric of rotating and non-rotating black holes. We derived that rotating black hole will create a traversable worm hole without exotic particles and non-rotating back hole will create another universe by interpretation of path integral finally. We proposed the way how to create the wormhole between two interstellar space using qubits. This proved ER=EPR. John Preskill Dear Professor Preskill Please help me check it Sir.

It is well-established that chronic MSK pain is the key factor for physical disability in the adult population. 19 The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 20–33% (over 1.71 billion individuals) of the global population suffers from chronic MSK pain. 20 This type of disorder is characterized by acute or chronic pain in MSK structures, which involve muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and nerves. 21 The most common conditions responsible for visits to a physician’s office are OA, rheumatoid arthritis, myofascial pain syndrome (MPS), and low back and neck pain. 22 Less common incidents are generally accompanying with injuries like of tendon sprains, ligament tears, muscle tears, fractures, and similar damage during sports. 20

If left untreated, these conditions progressively increase suffering, disability, and drug consumption, which subsequently diminish an individual’s quality of life. 23 This also translates to a main community health problem due to significant high expenses for health-care systems and insurance for disability. Advanced age may remain the top variable associated with the increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and MSK pain; however, these conditions may still unfold at any given age for various reasons. Therefore, every individual is at risk of experiencing MSK pain throughout an entire lifetime. 24 Acute pain can become chronic due to numerous factors. The level of intensity, site, and time of noxious stimuli are dictated by the interplay between mechanical, chemical, and thermal receptors and immune cells. 25 Under standard conditions, noxious stimuli and painful sensations gradually decrease with the progression of healing.

Are telomeres really the key to living longer, youthful lives? https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/10/are-telomeres-really-the-key-to-living-longer-youthful-lives https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/10/are-telomeres-really-the-key-to-living-longer-youthful-lives#comments Tue, 22 Oct 2024 13:23:02 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2024/10/are-telomeres-really-the-key-to-living-longer-youthful-lives

As Canadians brace for “vitamin D winter”—months when the sun’s angle is too low to produce the vitamin in the skin—a McGill University study explains why vitamin D deficiency early in life is associated with a higher risk of autoimmune diseases.

During childhood, the thymus helps train to distinguish between the body’s own tissues and harmful invaders. A vitamin D deficiency at that stage of life causes the thymus to age more quickly, the researchers discovered.

The study is published in the journal Science Advances.
