Information technologies are amazing but we mustn’t end up with a soulless society in which everything is digitized, including human identity, and everything is monitored. Consciousness is essential to being human and both privacy and independence of thought are part of consciousness. Google is great but they crossed over the line by coming into our neighborhoods to videotape our private spaces. And governments spying on our private communications cross that line, too, becoming equally invasive. How about developing an international code of privacy and independence of thought to help set limits for the digital age and the monitoring of individuals in the future?
