But we have enough places out in the middle of nowhere (ever been to South Dakota or Nevada- or the gobi?) that sqare miles of recieving field and safety zones of many more sqare miles around them are not big problem.

An incredible amount of solar power could be harvested on the moon. The concern however I would have with such large scale high power microwave transmitters would not be incinerating targets but driving you insane. You should read up on the effects of microwave radiation on the blood brain barrier -
