From what I’ve seen, Mr. Shiller proposes a to-do list for investors that reads something like this:
1. Make it a personal rule always to talk with others — or at least your spouse — before making any important investment decision.
2. Consult with a personal financial advisor.
3. Make it a point from time to time to read magazines or columns on personal finance, or tune in to financial advice shows, even if investing is not a congenial topic for you; don’t leave it all to your advisor.
4. Make it a personal rule to diversify broadly across all asset classes.
5. Reflect on the fact that you, as a member of the human race, are vulnerable to psychological issues such as attention anomalies and overconfidence.

I’m very excited that he has made it a point to promote this type of agenda — especially #3. I hope that more investors will follow his advice, and I do think that his name alone will help get this information mainstream.

Though a bit simplified, I hope the future that you describe is possible.
