Dr. Daniele Tosi

Daniele Tosi, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at newborn Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan and is working as Research Fellow at University of Limerick, Ireland.

Daniele’s background merges academic achievements and entrepreneurial perspectives.

He is a Telecommunications Engineer with a deep academic and technical background in optics, optical fibers, electronics, signal processing, and software. He gained his best achievements by bringing from scratch to prototype a new concept of fiber Bragg grating sensors, reducing costs up to 3–5 times over competing technologies. This project led him through prestigious Fulbright (US) and Endeavour (AUS) scholarships.

In 2008, he was awarded a Fulbright BEST scholarship which pushed him straight to the Silicon Valley, where he absorbed the entrepreneurial mindset both from courses and from just living. That changed his perspective. He has worked at Experience Project, learning how a network of passionate people can pull a social network more effectively than a marketing campaign (and how vanishing are social media forecasts, oftentimes).

Daniele coauthored Low-cost fiber Bragg grating vibroacoustic sensor for voice and heartbeat detection, Broadband Source-Based Interrogation Scheme of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors for Structural Health Monitoring, Self-mixing based interrogation techniques for high-reflectivity fibre Bragg grating sensors, Low-cost fiber Bragg grating-based static and dynamic strain system for structural monitoring, Improved Fibre Bragg Grating Interrogation for Dynamic Strain Measurement, Non-contact low-cost fiber distance sensor with compensation of target reflectivity, and Optical microphone with fiber Bragg grating and signal processing techniques.

Daniele earned his Ph.D. in Optical Fiber Components Research at Politecnico di Torino in 2009. He earned his Certificate of Technology Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University in 2009. He earned his ASP degree in Telecommunications Engineering at Alta Scuola Politecnica in 2007 and his M.Sc. in Telecommunications Engineering at Politecino di Torino in 2006. He earned his B.Sc. in Telecommunications Engineering at Politecnico di Torino in 2004.
